Creative & Flexible

Curriculum

Creative Curriculum

We use creative curriculum designed around monthly themes with weekly subthemes. Our different themes allow for us to change songs, books, projects and activities weekly to keep learning exciting and fresh. We follow a Reggio Emilia approach which promotes flexibility in the curriculum, allowing children to choose topics of interest at any given moment.  Children are fully engaged and eager to learn about topics they are truly interested in.

Social and Emotional

Here at Unity we believe social and emotional growth is paramount. Our goal is to help children develop a strong sense of positive self worth. We believe with a solid foundation of love for self anything is possible. We also teach to care for one another and to treat others with respect. Each second of the day is a chance to work on social and emotional development and it is the upmost important piece of our curriculum.

Physical and Cognitive

Our day is structured to alternate between child led and adult led activities. Each week we will cover all important areas of development physical, cognitive, social and emotional through planned age appropriate activities. Circle time, small group, large group, and free play are integrated in our daily schedule. We meet each child where they are at and alter each activity to meet their specific level of needs.

Play

We believe that children learn best through play so we allow for uninterrupted child led play indoors and outdoors each day. Children are encouraged to freely explore the space and use materials anyway their imagination wishes. As a grownup my job during play is to recognize a child's interests and using a scaffolding technique I can expand learning. We realize independent play provides a wonderful time for children to solve problems and explore.

Environment

Following a Reggio Emilia approach we believe the families are the first teacher, educators are the second and our environment is the third teacher. Our space is designed to be a child led learning experience. We divide our space into specific learning centers such as movement, music, science, art, reading and dramatic play. We offer loose parts and open ended materials to allow for imagination and creation. Our environment changes almost weekly to keep children engaged.

Observing and Assessing

I will observe children daily. Observing children allows me to gauge where each child is developmentally. It provides a clear picture of each child's individual needs and growth. I will document growth in all areas of development and share with parents each step of the way. With these assessments I can better keep each child on track for developmental milestones. I understand each child is unique and milestones are not once size fits all. I choose a individual approach for this reason.
